I couldn't work out why my radeon 7500 (thinkpad t42) went from 700fps
down to less than 200 when I upgraded to Xorg (6.7) from XFree86.  The
Xorg logs insist DRI was being started.  A little more digging revealed
the following...

Looks like the DRI interface changed maybe?  Looks like I should
upgrade.

I only post this because another person couldn't work out why DRI was
stated to be working in the X logs, but obviously wasn't due to really
sluggish performance.
