Well, I haven't tried to reinstall madwifi since I wasted six hours in
October tracking down different patches and trying lots of things none
of which worked. (Now that my PC has been stolen :-(, the point is moot
since my new PC has the Intel chipset).
My point is that whenever a new kernel version comes out it usually
breaks madwifi, and you have to wait, sometimes several weeks, for the
CVS version to support the new kernel. For someone who doesn't want to
wait, or doesn't want the trouble of constantly patching and rebuilding
their drivers, Atheros is not a good choice if you can avoid it. For
those of us stuck with Atheros chipsets, I'm glad the madwifi project is
there, and they're doing great work, but it's just the nature of the
beast when the manufacturer doesn't support open source.
So my original point still stands...if you don't want to have to
recompile and reinstall drivers with every kernel upgrade, don't get
Atheros.
