I don't have that laptop model but one of the things I found with a
vanilla anything kernel and my thinkpad t23 running debian unstable,
was that the acpi in the kernel would cause kernel panics upon resume.
I patched a 2.6.8.1 vanilla/kernel.org kernel with the patches at
acpi.sf.net that are available and acpi started working quite well. I
also wrote a smallish suspend script for lid close events which worked
very well. The main thing was that acpi in the kernels I tried never
worked.
Try building a vanilla kernel and patching it with the latest acpi
patches and see.
I also got the suspend2 stuff to work as well but with 2.6.8.1 there
was a specific order to things to make that kernel patch clean.
