Try "fdisk -l /dev/hda". I found SuSE's kernel read and wrote OK through
the predesktop area to the end of the disk, but one I'd compiled myself
wouldn't read or write past the beginning of the PDA. That caused great
fun, because /usr (created under SuSE's kernel) extended to the end of the
disk.
