I had problems compiling that, too. Waht I found out that it is
important to use the packages flex-old (not flex) and bison (not
bison++).
The versions I used are bison_1.875a-1.1 and flex-old_2.5.4a-6.
Everything worked apart from some warnings.
Using other packages
brought the same error message you got.

This is on a R40 with Debian 3.1 testing (Sarge, I think).
