 I've got the *same* model as you (T40p 2373-G1G), and I don't recall
 what windows was saying.  May be you took a different wifi option than
 the standard one?

 Anyway, I had success with a fresh CVS of madwifi.sf.net, patched with
 Volker Braun's patch (see madwifi-users archive).
