I would suggest avoiding VESA.
My T23 has a 866 MHz CPU, but I usually keep it at 600 MHz (to keep the
noisy fan from turning on). I am able to play DVDs with mplayer with
acceptable smoothness. I use the "s3" driver for X, and the "xv" driver
for mplayer.
