I had similar problems with my T40p.  I recompiled my kernel without 
APIC or LAPIC support.  This also fixed serveral other problems, like 
Fn+F7, Fn+F3, display lockups.  I have not had any other problems since 
this change.  I am using Gentoo with Gentoo-Sources 2.6.8-release 3.
