Maybe, but I have seen laptops where the single input jack was
switchable between mic and line in via the audio device's mixer. I
don't know if that is what the X40 does. Did you look through IBM's docs?

I've used a Griffin iMic with an older ThinkPad. For output it works
well. For input it works OK, but it is microphonic. That is, if you
tap the iMic's case during recording it will inject a thump sound into
the recording. It you don't bump it the iMic works OK. The mic/line
switch is counter-intuitive, and the analog input amps are not
audiophile quality, but it does a fair job for the price.
