Which patch is this? And what purpose does it serve?

It's VMWare Workstation 4.5.2 build 8848 I'm running. The first couple
of modules compiled OK, but then the compilation crashed out. I assume
that 2.6.11 was outside of the offically supported 2.6 kernel versions
(which stops at 2.6.8, IIRC) and that the issue would be addressed in a
later update.
