Check out ibm-acpi and the hotkeys section in the README.

Enabling them generates ACPI events on which you can react, but some
(i.e. Fn-Space) don't generate any hotkeys.

tpb (http://www.nongnu.org/tpb/) can also take care of these and has a
nice OSD when started from an X session.
