So here I go. I bought a T42 last August and I have used ACPI right from
the start (which was 2.6.8 or the like). Back then I had to remove the
ehci_hcd module (USB2) for suspend or it wont wake up. I used debian
stock XFree86 recompiled with a Radeon powersaving patch and the stock
radeon module, later the r300 patches with x.org.
True 3D acceleration (which needs ATIs fglrx) wont resume properly from
suspend to RAM. So this is probably just a 99% success story ;-)

Since 2.6.10 I dont need to remove kernel modules for any built-in
hardware any more - I just make sure that the BT adapter gets disabled
before S3 (and reenabled afterwards) with a simple shell script.

In fact I never used suspend-to-disk yet since the 9-cell battery is
able to keep the machine in S3 for almost a week. I have given extensive
details on how I installed my T42p at thinkwiki - so if you are
interested go there and have a look. (http://beam-me-to?t42p-wiki)
