Just in case you missed it - that would be Fn-*F8*, not Fn-8. It's not
always marked as doing something either - even on some Thinkpads where
it DOES work.

Can't hurt to check, though. My wife's X20 will sometimes "helpfully"
reset the display settings in the BIOS if she boots it while plugged
into a monitor.
Another thing to check - when you switch to a console, does your
console fill the screen, or does it look like your "fullscreen" games?
