Robert,
ACPI doesn't work at all with the T21. In fact, you'll want to add
acpi=no to your bootloader.
I wrote an article about the T21 recently in:

While loading gentoo, I suggest you bring emerge configure-thinkpad. It
will give you the information you need regarding acpi and it's a great
tool for the thinkpad.
