I did try a similar thing recently with a different approach...it didn't
work out, but just for the reason that i have two Windows and one Linux
installation and the little supersensitive NT bootloader just sucks.
The approach is to partition the new harddrive with a windows
partitioning tool, set up a temporary windows system and use scopy (you
can get that from MS) bootet into the temporary system to copy all the
files from the real Win partition to the new one. Afterwards you have to
readjust the drive letter mappings in the registry file on the
destination system (before reboot). Then you can install Linux
afterwards.
That sounds like a lot of hassle, but my try was pretty fast (although i
have to say i copied from internal HDD to UltraBay HDD). Anyway,
following the steps (google for "windows copy partition") the procedure
is more straight forward than it sounds - as long as you don't try
fiddling with NT boot loader. And the big advantage is that you can copy
to a larger partition.
