That's what I'm actually doing. :)

I'm now pretty certain that only the libGL (and the xorg.conf file) need
to be exchanged when switching driver versions, after all only the libGL
gets diverted (with dpkg-divert in Debian). And since changing the
symlink is no problem, I guess I leave it at that.
