Hello
(I am sorry about my breaking the threading - I am not subscribed).
I read about problems about the recovery partition and grub. I have a setup
that might help somebody. I do not have a working "Access IBM"-button, but I
can choose the recovery partition from the grub menu. This is on a T42 with
Ubuntu Hoary.
My partitioning:
- primary partition with XP
- extended partitions with Ubuntu
- primary partition with recovery partition
In menu.lst, if I remember correctly, I just had to add the titles and the
hide/unhide you see below:
# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/hda1
title Microsoft Windows XP Professional
hide (hd0,1)
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
chainloader +1
# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/hda2
title Access IBM
unhide (hd0,1)
root (hd0,1)
savedefault
chainloader +1
BTW, both of these partitions are as delivered by IBM, no reinstallations.
To get there, my absolute first boot was from a live CD (Ubuntu) from where
I could shrink (using parted) the first partition. And, if you prefer fat32
over ntfs like me (for easy rw-mounting from linux), you take the following
files away from XP before its first boot: convert.exe and autoconv.exe, in
/windows/system32/ and in /i386/.
