Do your USB sticks only work at USB 1.1 speeds under Windows XP?

This is a well-known problem on all early T40 series models. The problem
is that the USB controller on the Intel chipset gets damaged and this
manifests itself in the messages like those below, as well as USB 2 not
working.

The solution is to send the machine to IBM for system board replacement,
citing USB malfunctions. The replaced system board worked fine for me
(well, it didn't the first time because the first replacement was
faulty, but that's another story) and the USB problems disappeared.

Depending on the age of your machine, you may not have much time left in
warranty, so don't hesitate and send it in - this is a hardware problem.
