Why don't consider a A31p? It's the most powerful Thinkpad ever existed!
If you need some mobility, T23 is also a good choice.
I don't know a lot about Linux either, although I am using/learning it on my
T40, so I don't know some "gotchas" or models to avoid.
For the dock and Ultrabay compatibility, A20m and T2x series both have
Ultrabay 2000, while A30/p and A31/p has Ultrabay Plus, which is compatible
with Ultrabay 2000 devices. (Lucky!)
