to set a region (any region) into the firmware before I could use the
CSS hacked code to play DVD content at all.

Once that was done, though, I didn't need to get a region 0 setup, or an
RPC-1 firmware.  My drive still has the original RPC-2 firmware with
region 4 set, and plays DVD content just fine.
