The kernel parameter is "nolapic", but it caused a blank screen and no  
booting on my machine (R51, Mandrake 10.1). Compiling a new kernel with no  
local apic support did indeed work. Better yet, the latest mdk-kernel  
update did solve the problem too (no need to re-compile anything).
