[ltp] Boot up problem - t20

Yesterday when I tried to start my T20 it got to the point of having the
diagional IBM logo on the screen, with a message about Pressing F1 for
BIOS and F12 to choose temporary boot device. That appears in the
bottom left of the screen.

Pressing F1 a message "Entering System BIOS appears in larger type on
the bottom right, but the machine goes no further, and needs to be
switched off. Pressing F12 gives a similarly placed message about
searching for boot devices, and again it locks up at that point.

The strange thing is I'm sure I have not seen that screen (the diagonal
IBM logo with the F1/F12 options) before on this machine. I am sure it
usually starts at a POST type screencounting up the RAM, with a message
at the bottom saying F2 for Bios and some other key (either ESC or F
something) for choosing the boot device.

I thought I might have this problem:
http://www.winnetmag.com/Windows/Article/ArticleID/19920/19920.html and
have followed the instructions there, and several variations found
elsewhere. I have even removed the cmos battery as well and waited half
an hour before trying again.

Any clues as yo what to try next would be appreciated.

This is not necessarily a linux question, but I ma not sure where else
to ask, sosorrty if it is a little OT. The system does (or did) run
linux (gentoo with kernel 2.6.9, no changes recently), its the sole OS
on the hard drive, plus there is a small FAT partition in the hope of
getting hibernate to work at some point.
