I just tested it, turning this:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "my_1536x1152" "my_1280x960" "my_1024x768" ...
EndSubsection
into this:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "my_1280x960" "my_1536x1152" "my_1024x768" ...
EndSubsection
and it started in 1280x960. Ctrl-alt-plus brought up 1536x1152.
