Another possibility: maybe you're using gnome-cd to listen to your cd
and there's no analogue connection from your combo player to the system.
gnome-cd (as shipped with FC3) doesn't seem to handle digital playback
of CD's (yet). xmms does (after some tweaking of preferences - and
getting used to the interface, I might add).
If you indeed were using gnome-cd and not xmms I'd be happy to explain
the tweaking xmms needs to play CD's.
Of course, this is (was?) a general gnome-cd issue and nothing specific
to the Thinkpad.
