In battery power mode, this may work with tpctl. This tool can switch
between darker display and full brightness as in AC power mode when no AC
power is connected.

Maybe you can also use ibm-acpi, see the capter "CMOS control" and the
LCD brightness parameters in <http://ibm-acpi.sourceforge.net/README>.
