Just wanted to share the good news - problem solved. Using the 
PS2.exe-cd found at http://www.baiti.net/tp770x/ps2.html

The command 'ps2 PCIBUSPower disable' has made it possible for the 
Gentoo-live cd (2004.2) to access the net. I have yet to try some of the 
other ditros that failed before to see if its a 'broard' fix for the 
issue ...
