I have run into the same problem on T42p with ACPI suspend to RAM and ATI's
fglrx drivers.
With X.org 6.8.*, older fglrx drivers do not work. Only the latest one
(8.8.25) fglrx works with X.org 6.8.*.
The DRI-suspend problem is well-known. It is mentioned as one of the issues
with the release notes of ATI's 8.8.25 drivers as well. There are only a few
options.
1. Use APM and not ACPI if it works for you. ATI's drivers supposedely support
suspend/resume with APM but not in ACPI.
2. Do, init 3 before ACPI suspend - this is not really practical because one
does not to close X just to suspend to RAM.
3. Downgrade to XFree86 4.3.99 or X.org 6.7. I *think* ATI's drivers support
suspend/resume with that.
4. Wait for ATI's next linux drivers that are due sometime in February. They
may or may not have ACPI support :).
