I use a 500MHz 100FSB 700x as my midi box.
I went back from FC3 to FC2 because the sound applications ( Rosegarden4
) seemed to work better.
Your modules.conf will need to look something like this:
#///////////////// Sound 770x works 03/07/05 ////////////
# This file is autogenerated from /etc/modules.conf using
generate-modprobe.conf command
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /bin/true
alias wlan0 ndiswrapper
options snd device_mode=0666
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs4236
options snd-cs4236 port=0x530 cport=0x538 isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5
alias snd-0 snd-cs4236

I have tried Mandrake and Mepis (which is based on sarge) on my 600 with the
2.6 kernel. Sound worked OK with both distros. A clean install of Debian
sarge with the 2.6 kernel messes up my sound card though.

I sold my 600, but I do have a 770-series laptop, which has similar
sound hardware. Once I figured out how to configure sound manually (it
was not autodetected), I've had no problems with sound under 2.6
kernels. This is on Fedora Core 3.
