Thanks for the link.  I've read through the bug report and applied the
patch.  The patch seems to work (i.e., not crash my machine), but the
improvement is not so drastic as some other people reported:

result: -1093 mW
Your model seems to be affected.

It's a T41 (23739HG).  I will add this information to the bug report.
