glxgears is a poor benchmark, being so simple.  I am interested in more 
telling benchmarks.  Can you try running SPECviewperf and post your 
results, please?  I'd really appreciate it.

Here are my results on a T43p w/ "MOBILITY FireGL V3200 (M24 3154)" for 
glxgears and SPECviewperf 8.1 on Debian Linux, 2.6.12-rc6, ATI fglrx 
8.14.13-2, xorg 6.8.2:

12820 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2564.000 FPS
14820 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2964.000 FPS
14821 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2964.200 FPS
14822 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2964.400 FPS
14819 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2963.800 FPS

3dsmax-03 Weighted Geometric Mean =   6.457
catia-01 Weighted Geometric Mean =   5.021
ensight-01 Weighted Geometric Mean =   8.022
light-07 Weighted Geometric Mean =   7.340
maya-01 Weighted Geometric Mean =   9.776
proe-03 Weighted Geometric Mean =   6.601
sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean =   6.344
ugs-04 Weighted Geometric Mean =   10.34
