OK - this is a T22. Different battery, but possibly similar technology.

I tried that and it didn't work. It still refuses to change past 1%. 

OK, so I check the machine still behaves properly with my old battery, then
do a BIOS upgrade and see if that fixes it. I'm not too keen to talk to IBM
as my machine is second hand and _way_ out of warranty. I'd expect to get
short shrift (the website talks a lot about charging me for support if out
of warranty). Still I can try hassling the battery supplier.

Thanx for the clues. Maybe I'll read the smart battery spec - there really
ought to be some kind of 'reset' for when things have got confused.
