Have you tried the sugestion in the above link?

I have found that I had to Mute __both__ "Headphone Jack Sense" and
"Line Jack Sense" in order to ear the audio in rc4.

BTW: I'm currently using 2.6.11 [with fedora rawhide kernel patches]
on FC3 - and sound works fine on my T41
