Actually I just noticed that I was accidentally booting into the  the 
Debian 2.6.8-686 stock kernel when I tested your script. With 2.6.11 and 
2.6.10, I still get the error and am left without USB after resuming.

So probably something has been broken in recent kernel lines - I'll 
submit a bug report. If somebody has any other solutions, please let me 
know!
