For what it is worth, I decided to see what BIOS updates existed for the
T40, as the brand new harddrive didn't seem like is was a likely culprit.
I had - BIOS: 1.04, Control Program: 1.02
There is now - BIOS: 3.14, Control Program: 3.04
Instructions are here on how to get .img files out of the windows BIOS
installer: http://www.digriz.org.uk/t40p-linux/#bios-update
I burned them to 2 cds, updated Control Program (do this *first* the
instructions are very specific), then the BIOS.
Now running off the battery seems to work fine. I even just restored from
pmsuspend2 with no issues into X.
As it has only been about 8 hours since I did the update, I won't declare
full victory yet. However it is looking pretty good.

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors
than zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
