Sorry --- I backed out the patch and went gentoo 2.6.11-r4, so the
config I sent wasn't the one I tried with your patch. I was just
anxious to get back to a Thinkpad that boots!

When I failed, I had applied the patch to gentoo 2.6.10-r6 .. Gentoo
doesn't patch the radeon driver, so the patch at least applies fine.

That was with the .config I sent. It had "no problems" insofar it booted
and started X. It then turned out that sound was gone, but that has
mysteriously returned, as detailed in another thread. Unfortunately I'm
still at square one regarding sleep (also in the "... sound's gone ..."
thread).
Next I should enable FB and try your patch.
Please excuse my trying your patience.
