I built up an entire blfs system on my tp600e (with kde, too) with the 
same your hope, but I can't notice difference with a debian, while 
slackware 9.1 was a little bit faster (but not so slack 10.0).

I think it's more important an accurate choice of the packages and a 
well done fine tuning.
