[ltp] mwave on tp600e makes me crazy

I keep on trying to make mwave work...
After 2.6.7 and 2.6.10 custom kernels I've switched to 
2.4.27-2-686_2.4.27-9 from debian testing. After booting with the new 
kernel I recompiled and started the mwavem package and now it blocks the 
shell:
root@thinkpad:~# /etc/init.d/mwavem start
ttyS1 at port 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
Starting Mwave modem: (module:) mwave

...and nothing more. I can switch to another console (I'm in textual 
mode) but I connot kill it nor shutdown.
Could it be a hardware problem?
Has anybody out there seen something like this?
