Thanks for the tip. 

Here's I got these binaries to install:

I downloaded and un-tarred the latest 'common' and 'savage' packages.
They both put their files in the same 'dripkg' sub-directory. 

There was an 'install.sh' script to run there, but first I had install 
a kernel source tree, which is easy for the typical mandriva linux case:

urpmi kernel-source

Then I seemed to need to help out the installer by providing some hints
in environment variables:

LINUXDIR=/usr/src/linux DRM_MODULES='savage' ./install.sh

Then the installer ran without error. Now next time I have other 'head'
handy, I'll have to test that it actually works. :)
