[ltp] prevent X screen blanking on X40?

I'm running the X.org X server over Debian on my thinkpad X40.
The server works great except when I have output to an external monitor
and am using a USB keyboard.  Eventually the screen blanks
and pounding on the USB keyboard will not revive it.  I have to open
the laptop and hit keys on the real keyboard in order to get
the display back.  Does anybody have any ideas how to abate this 
nuisance?

If it matters, the USB keyboard is plugged into a 4-port hub.
