I think there are a couple of awesome things.
1. Take brightness down
2. hardcore cpufreqd configuration
3. laptop-mode (this is a must)
Monitor your CPU temp with acpi -V and HDD Temp with hddtemp /dev/hda
You can also play with the CPU Fan options.
