Hi,
don't know if this fits your issue...
i've had some issues/questions regarding pIII-speedstep with my last
(inspiron 8100) laptop.
here the answers from Mattia Dongili (the whole thread is available at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=%23253299 ):
ok, having some conversation with the cpufreq-people, here's the story
and the solution:
1. the speedstep-ich-driver doesn't work on dell inspiron 8?00 laptops
(which is also mentioned in
arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-ich.c), because it's a very - too
- early revision of the chipset.
2. the speedstep-smi-driver is a "second-best" solution, it works by
telling the bios to switch the frequency, which can be slow (--> here
ist where my problem "little system hang" occurs)
3. another solution - for me and my inspiron 8100 the
"first-best"-solution:
using the cpufreq-acpi-driver
--- kernel-2.6.6-config:
# CPUFreq processor drivers
#
CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ=m
---
with this configuration the switching works flawless.
so you might check the revision of your chipset...
greetings,
thomas
