to stop your fan, use a script as given in the thinkpad wiki.
To avoid the need of starting the fan, use cpufreq management (in 
kernel, or with powernowd or cpufreqd)
To keep your graphic card cool, use DynamicClocks.
To prevent your HDD from writing all the time, mount your disks with 
noatime option and use laptop mode.

You shouldn't hear it anymore :)
