[ltp] DVD playing on R31?

I've been offered a used DVD playing/CD-writing device for my
Thinkpad R31 used $100, present status unknown.

On boot up, what should the kernel indicate it as?

Can someone point me to documentation on how to get this to work in my
R31, both for playing music CDs and for playing DVDs and burning CDs?

I already can play music CDs and read data CDs.  Do have to do
something special for this to happen with this device?  (If not, it
may be defective.)  It says "IBM DCD", "RPC II", "Hitachi GD-S200",
"Rev A5", manufactured May 2001.
