The radeonchip hangs if 2 programms try to activate powersaving. So maybe  
you have dynamic clock option activated in your xorg.conf.

Btw: dynamic clock works flawlessly in xorg 7.0. There is no need to use  
rovclock anymore, since dyn. clocks does the same thing.
