I've also been able to replicate lockups on a T60 by writing to the
sysfs protect attribute (vanilla 2.6.16/17 + latest hdaps_protect
patch). Unfortunately I haven't had much opportunity to investigate - so
I'm not sure if it's AHCI specific, or whether recent changes in either
the kernel or the hdaps_protect patches are the cause.
Would be very interesting to see whether it's also happening for people
using IDE or libata_piix drivers...
