You can update the processor at the same time as replacing
the fan. If you can, use the IBM/Lenovo website Parts Information
page to get which fan (short or long) you need, note the FRU number, and
pick it up off eBay. Also, look for an updated processor (Dothan
1.7GHz is an SL7EP, runs great in a T40) while you are at it. That
website has a great Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM in IBM-Speak) that
takes you right through the process. For FAN and PROCESSOR, assuming
a 14.1" display, you need to pull four screws and keyboard, eight
screws and palmrest, four screws and upper bezel, three screws and GENTLY
lift the FAN up, unplug it, and work it out. Half turn on the CPU
Socket lock, carefully remove and replace the CPU. Smear of white
thermal goo on the processor and carefully drop the processor in the socket
so its flat, lock it, and reverse the process above.
