Hi Andy

I had the same problem in ubuntu
a workaround is:

put at the end of /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh
just before the : exit 0
after the esac

chown root:video /dev/nvram


and add nvram to /etc/modules

now you should be able to use kmilo for your thinkpad
