The X31 can boot from an external USB CD-ROM drive.  You don't need the
IBM dock or an IBM-brand drive.  I used a generic external USB2 CD/DVD
drive for my install.

I'm currently running Ubuntu Breezy and all the X31's hardware is
supported.  Modem (slmodem), wireless (ipw2100), etc. all work nearly
"out-of'the'box".  I would assume it's similar for the current Ubuntu -
Dapper.
