I am using the latest drivers on a T60p with no trouble.  Looking at
your log, I'm not sure what's going wrong but it may be something
specific to the hardware in the T42.

The only other thing I've done is to build packages from the Debian
source rather than using the packages generated by the ATI installer.

My machine has a FireGL V5200, running Debian sid with a custom-built
2.6.17.11 kernel.
