Okay, so I found a simple hack that was based on a recommendation from bug
#239 (the link above). All I have to do is put in a "/usr/bin/chvt 1" in
my /etc/X11/xdm/Xreset script. I assume kdm and gdm can be adapted
accordingly.
This allow X to shutdown properly, bypassing whatever problem ATI drivers
have when shutting down an X server.
It's a lot like the SwitchToTextMode hack in the hibernate script. ATI is
so slow to getting to stuff like this. I hate that what should be a
temporary solution might stick around for a while. But I'm going to stick
with fglrx for now, because it gives me nice power management.
